Ursuline College Integrates HoloPatient Across Courses & Levels

According to the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, only 9% of new graduate nurses are prepared to practice. The reasons and proposed solutions are varied, but one thing is clear: nursing educators must address the issue with resources that can be implemented quickly and easily. This isn’t the time for patchworked solutions: institutions and instructors must scale new ideas across curricula.

As mixed reality becomes more mainstream, it’s playing a pivotal role in bridging the gap between theoretical learning and patient care. Applications like GigXR’s HoloPatient enable instructors to deliver on-demand simulation and tailor it to course content at all levels.

Ursuline College, which boasts a 100% pass rate for licensure exams and post-graduation employment, tapped HoloPatient to train soft skills, clinical judgment, and critical thinking. Leveraging just this one application, instructors brought key concepts to life, helping learners prioritize patients, anticipate next steps, delegate care tasks, and prioritize provider orders.

“We rely on case studies as a mainstay in nursing education; using HoloPatient enables us to bring them to life with video and ‘show’ rather than ‘tell’ our learners what they might experience in real-world practice,” said Caitlin Yeager, PhD, RNC-NIC, CHSE, CNE, Assistant Professor, Director, Health Resource and Simulation Center, Ursuline College.

With GigXR’s HoloPatient, Ursuline College empowered learners to master:

To showcase the potential of this partnership, GigXR will be demonstrating its complementary, award-winning catalog of mixed reality applications at the upcoming IMSH 2024 conference, where attendees can experience firsthand hyper-realistic clinical simulation, including:

  • Patient Prioritization: Through video clips of patients, learners explore factors determining which patient a nurse should see first: the one with a headache or hip pain.
  • Anticipating Next Steps: Learners analyze patient data to consider what actions they or a provider might need to take next for a given pathology.
  • Thinking Like A Nurse: Combining HoloPatient and slides enabled learners to practice leadership skills, such as prioritizing patient treatments and delegating tasks.

According to research conducted by Ursuline College, the impact on learner confidence showed measurable results. After one exercise, they reported:

  • 18% increase in confidence in prioritizing a list of patients.
  • 16% increase in student confidence in prioritizing a set of provider orders.
  • 19% increase in student confidence in delegating tasks to unlicensed personnel.

As learners graduate into a field increasingly impacted by rapidly evolving digital technology, institutions such as Ursuline College are helping them stay ahead of the curve while improving their preparedness. At GigXR, we’re proud to empower institutions and instructors with the hyper-realistic training tools they need to prepare the next generation of nursing professionals for real-world practice–delivered seamlessly by the Gig Immersive Learning Platform.
